The ongoing story of how U.S.C.G. Certified Captain Maggie McDonogh and her family lineage have shaped San Francisco Bay history reads like an “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” novel. You see, it was over a half a century ago when Captain Maggie’s father Captain Milton McDonogh founded the public ferry passage from his Tiburon dock to Angel Island State Park’s Ayala Cove when the military made its final departure from Angel Island. This milestone in Angel Island State park history was responsible for the transition that took place allowing the rest of the island to become public parkland under the California State Park system.
Today, Angel Island State Park still possesses all the magic and wonderment it did back in 1959 when Ayala Cove first opened up its arms to the public with the passion and undying support of 3rd generation Tiburon sailor Captain Milton McDonogh, son of Samuel McDonogh II, who established what is today a true piece of California”living history” ~ the Angel Island Tiburon Ferry.
Prior to launching Angel Island Tiburon Ferry, which provides dedicated ferry service to Angel Island State Park via the McDonogh family’s Tiburon, Calif. dock, the McDonogh family duo – an a tour and charter boat service on San Francisco Bay.
“It really is a family affair,” offers McDonogh, adding, “My fiancé Skipper William Bryerton runs the boats along with me, and my 19 year old son Sam is a deck hand and actively pursuing his 100 Ton Captain’s license so he can also get behind the wheel. Our daughter and younger son are alsoon-board to help out when ever they can…so I guess you can say this ferry boat business is really in our blood.”
Fast forward to 2014, Margaret McDonogh, AKA: “Captain Maggie,” daughter of the late Milton McDonogh is following in her family’s seafaring footsteps as the owner and 4th generation Captain of the McDonogh family on San Francisco Bay. As Angel Island Tiburon Ferry Co. President & Chairman of the Board, Captain Maggie McDonogh manages the day-to-day activities for what is now the last remaining family owned & operated ferry service in California.
In the community, Captain Maggie can be found playing “Ferry Godmother” to groups of gifted and at-risk children by providing them with ferry rides and an outdoor experience of a lifetime. The role of captain also means being prepared for anything, from transporting firefighters and island personnel as needed, to saving the lives of troubled boaters on San Francisco Bay. Community involvement plays an important role in Angel Island Ferry’s mission to serve the public, and give back. To this end, Captain Maggie McDonogh and Angel Island Tiburon Ferry Co. are recipients of The American Red Cross Lifesaving Hero Organization Award, and Bank of Marin’s 2012 Business of the Year. A true humanitarian, Captain Maggie is involved with many charitable organizations, and is noted as an esteemed North Bay Business Journal Woman of The Year.
