Let’s face it, there are great California beaches…and then there California beaches so awesome like those found on Angel Island that you need to make sure you visit them at least once in your lifetime.
Getting There: We hear it all the time…half the fun of visiting Angel Island is the ferry ride there… with Angel Island Tiburon Ferry out of Tiburon, CA. The Angel Island Tiburon Ferry ride to Angel Island State Park from Tiburon, CA is just 10 minutes – and offers spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. Find your own paradise island in the middle of San Francisco Bay with a visit to Quarry Beach -pictured above, and located on the east side of Angel Island Start Park and accessed via a short walk down from East Garrison. In addition to its million dollar views of the East Bay and the San Francisco skyline, you’ll generally find calmer winds on Quarry Beach, which offers the fine, white sand you’ve been dreaming of.

Pack a healthy picnic, or pick up a delish sandwich, boxed lunch or fresh, gourmet salad at The Angel Island Cafe located at Ayala Cove, which is open weekends in the winter starting February 2014, and 7 days a week beginning in March 2014.

Ready for some adventure with your beach day? Pack along your walking shoes for the approximate 1.5 mile trek along Angel Island’s Perimeter Road from Ayala Cove where you disembark to Perles Beach. Perles Beach is more secluded since it is not as easy to find as Quarry Beach- so stay alert to find the “unmarked” path just past Battery Ledyard that will lead you to Perles Beach.
Spend a few hours at Perles Beach and you’ll find that “getaway feeling” you’ve been looking for…without really going away. In the image above, you can get a good idea of the spectacular views that will be yours with a day-trip to Perles Beach on Angel Island State Park.
Captain Maggie’s Angel Island Travel Tip: Stop by the Visitor’s Center located in Ayala Cove to pick up a map of Angel Island and other informational hand-outs to make the most of your day on Angel Island State Park.
Captain Maggie also suggests travelers dress in layers, bring extra water bottles, snacks, and some spending money for food and souvenirs.
For those with little ones to look after and tote around, Ayala Cove is one of Angel Island’s best beaches for children, which is located a short distance from the dock. Pictured on left, Ayala Cove offers a fun and easy going environment for kids of all ages, and is close to everything including the public rest rooms, Angel Island Cafe, and Visitor Center.
